Completed Projects: 2004

Prison Skills Training Project - Phase 1
An Employment Training Scheme in construction at the Prison has been devised.
The results of this project will be a brand new custom-built building to replace what was known as the New Wing and two groups of 24 trainees certified in building skills and equipped to obtain employment on discharge.
The prisoners are being paid a stipend, which can be diverted to their dependants or saved towards discharge.
The project is to be funded in two phases and the first opened in May 2004.
The Government is supplying the technical assistance and the materials and the British High Commission has supplied EC$100,000 for instructors’ salaries and prisoners stipends.

Eyes and Ears: Sign In 2 Project
During 2003 funding of EC$26,400 was received from the British High Commission and this was used to facilitate a sign language class for hearing children in Portsmouth to enable integration, and in the Carib Territories both a mixed group of hearing and deaf people and a class of hearing children were taught weekly.
In addition, assistance was given in integrating two children with learning difficulties into Mahaut River School.
The Carib Council also identified a disabled individual (preferably deaf) to operate a donated brush cutter under their supervision.
In the School for the Deaf – Roseau, in the course of upgrading the tutor's skills weekly at the school, there was also opportunity to train the Deaf students in bead-craft.

Sign Language for Hearing Adults
A grant of $5000 was provided for a Sign Language Class for Hearing Adults in Roseau in May 2004.
A second class started in February 2005, this time entirely self financing.

Arc Welding Youth Skills Training 2 – Castle Bruce
The Arc Welding Project 2 started in 2003, funded by the British High Commission (EC $33,000).
This project trained 11 trainees in collaboration with the Youth Division and produced Burglar bars for the Grotto Home for the Homeless, repairs on the Pavilion in the Botanical Gardens, Gates and fences for Salybia School and a sign for the Salybia community facilities, where the Sign Language classes were held.
The funding was announced at an official visit to the Grotto on June 26th 2003, during a special visit from a team from a visiting British warship.
