Proposed Projects

Cricket Against Drugs Scheme
This scheme has been proposed for coaching youth at risk of drug abuse and requires funding of EC$50,000.
A league of teams supervised by police officers with input from the Drug Education Unit will be based at Police Headquarters.
Funding for this scheme is to be used to build a clubhouse and operate a bowling machine, loaned by Auto Trade for income generation purposes.

Castle Bruce Agricultural Training Project
This project is being developed in collaboration with Dominicans against Drugs (DAD) Youth Group.

Life Goes On - Resource & Respite Centre
This initiative proposes to establish a Resource & Respite Centre for those living with Chronic Illness.
The center will provide comprehensive care and support services to PLWHA and their families together with other individuals who struggle with illnesses such as sickle cell and Lupus.
Funding EC $297,220 is needed to support the service for 18 months.

Community Alternative Energy Installations
This project is being developed in collaboration with SLIC following the successful completion in 2005 of the Alternative Energy Training Modules Project.

Computer Classes for People with Disabilities - Part 2

Following the successful launch of Part 1 of this project, Part 2 is being developed in collaboration with the Dominica Association of Disabled People.

Computer Recycling Training
A new initiative being developed in collaboration with The Youth Division and The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre.
The proposal is for six young persons to be trained on a three month course in recycling computers during which time a service to Government Ministries, NGOS, schools and individuals would be established.
This service would involve a reasonable charge to cover costs so that the project would be sustainable.
The course would also include modules such as:
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Small business skills
  • Drug and Health education including HIV/AIDS awareness
  • Lifestyle and Relationships.
On completion of the course the graduates will have the opportunity to set up as a Youth Enterprise to provide a service to the Ministry of Education and other organisations repairing and maintaining the computers and providing a source of cheap used computers and parts.
Schools, community based groups and individuals would then be able to buy used computers at a reasonable price or bring their computer for repair.
Lifeline has already been running a pilot service using donated computer parts from the UK and is inundated with requests for repairs and replacement computers from individuals and organisations unable to afford new equipment.
Used computers would be recycled as far as possible and those which must be discarded will be disposed of in collaboration with the Solid Waste Corporation, in as responsible a way as possible, avoiding unsightly and polluting garbage littering the countryside.

YARD Computer Training Centre
This new initiative is aimed towards the establishment of a computer resource center, housing approximately 4-6 computers, to be used for the following:
  • Training and use in the Youth in Agricultural Rural Diversification (YARD) program
  • Venue for teaching classes in basic and intermediate computer operations
  • Resource center for college and secondary school students
  • Internet café open to the public

Based in the community of Delices, the center will function as an integral component of the YARD project - a youth skills training program that provides participants with all of the necessary skills to start their own agricultural business.
The YARD program has worked towards this primary aim through a training program that teaches participants all of the technical aspects of organic agriculture, while implementing training programs in social skills, business skills, and computer skills, to provide the trainees with all of the necessary tools to begin their own agricultural enterprise.
Due to the emphasis the program has placed on incorporating computers and technology into farm management, this computer center will be of the utmost importance to the program.
It is essential that the trainees be given the opportunity to put their acquired skills into practice in order to fully synthesize the information they have been taught, as well as to progress and further develop their marketing and record keeping skills.
In keeping in line with the YARD program's goal of introducing young people to attractive, revenue generating enterprises, the YARD computer center will also function as a multi-purpose computer resource center for the entire community of Delices.
The center will provide various services to the community, including computer classes and open hours for the public to do research and use the internet.
